Language Arts Shawnee Mission uses the Wonders Reading Series. In 1 st grade your child will work on… Blending & reading more fluently Sight Words Reading Strategies Nouns, verbs, & adjectives ABC Order Capitalization Punctuation Contractions

Homework & Spelling Homework is aligned with our Wonder’s reading program. It includes our weekly story with story skill practice, spelling, reading fluency, sight words, and a math practice page. It is will come home on Friday and is due the next Friday. Stories for HW will be on the Wonders website. Directions will be attached to homework. Spelling Tests are on Friday mornings. has our weekly spelling lists. You may use this as practice.

Sight Words Sight words for the week will be sent home on Fridays. Sight words are different from Spelling Words These are words we like the students to be able to read by sight. Sight words will be assessed at the end of each unit, which is every six weeks. These first few weeks are a review of Kdg. words. Students are assessed on reading the words, not spelling them. Sounding out the word is not knowing the word by sight. They should know the word within about 3 seconds.

Social Studies Communities Economics – Wants vs. Needs Citizenship Geography

Science Weather Shadows Health Space – sun, moon, & stars

When you are absent… Please call Julie Johnson or the office to let them know your child will be absent for the day. Please me if a sibling will be picking up work at the end of the school day. Please me if your child will be gone for a long period of time. For example a vacation or illness.
