An entry in the multiplication and division strand of the KNP Intervention Guide (Previously known as M 437)

Purpose Develop and practice multiplication concepts with support of a set model. Targeted practice for multiplication starting with the factors 2 and 5, extending to multiplication involving the factors 6 & 7. Extensions to missing factor tasks with the factors 6 & 7.

Fluency Standard 3.OA.7.Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.

Additional Standards 3.OA.1.Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7. 3.OA.4. Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 × ? = 48, 5 = _ ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ? 3.OA.5. Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide…. Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = = 56. (Distributive property.)

Dotted Popsicle Sticks

MOVE-IT Game Each player starts with 8 counters. GOAL: Play all 8 counters

MOVE-IT Game If Red’s number is “4”, Red will tell Blue to “Move It!” and will put a red counter on the 4 in it’s place.

M Skip counting with sticks

M Pop Drop Move-It (2 & 5) Click here for game board and recording sheet

Yellow player’s turn: Chose to drop the sticks with 5 dots 4 sticks landed dot- side-up. will place a yellow token on the “20”.

Green player’s turn: Chose to drop the sticks with 2 dots 5 sticks landed dot side up Placed a green token on the “10”. Player may record turn on the recording sheet

M Pop Drop Move-It

Player will determine the number of dots that are hidden. 5 sticks are face down, so player will cover “25” A student at this level may partner with a students playing at the.2 level of the game.

Recording Sheet Version A

Recording Sheet Version B

M Multiplication Move-It

Skip counting with the sticks is a great warm-up for levels 2, 3 and even 4!

M Pop Drop Move-It (6 or 7)

Version that targets multiplication with 6

Version that targets multiplication with 7

Sticks are color coded to bring attention to the 5-structure.

M Missing Factor Move-It

Sticks may be used by students to work out or check their solutions for missing factor tasks.
