LEARNING OBJECTIVES To develop the ability to summarise from non-fiction extracts To improve close reading skills

I N THE EXTENDED PAPER YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SUMMARISE FROM AN EXTRACT AND PUT KEY DETAILS IN YOUR OWN WORDS.... Question 3 tests this ability. TOP TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE SUMMARISING: Read the passages carefully. Highlighting key information that you will be summarising. Write in an informative style- You are giving a factual summary DO NOT WRITE A NARRATIVE OR IN THE FIRST PERSON Do NOT quote phrases from the passages. You must use YOUR OWN WORDS!! You must be CONCISE in your answer, you need to get as many points as possible into a few lines! If you are doing the Extended paper you must NOT write more than one side of average handwriting.

E XAMPLES OF SUMMARY QUESTIONS MOCK EXTENDED PAPER -QUESTION 3 Summarise: (a) The reasons children are not as adventurous today, as described in Passage B (b) The dangers Bear Grylls faced, as described in Passage A. Use your own words as far as possible. You should write about 1 side in total, allowing for the size of your handwriting. Up to fifteen marks will be available for the content of your answer, and up to five marks for the quality of your writing. (20 Marks) (21 minutes)

TO ACHIEVE BAND 1- THE TOP GRADE Both parts of the summary need to be well focused on the passage and the question. All points expressed clearly, concisely and fluently and in your own words.
