RUSA 201 How? What? When? A Look Behind-the-Scenes at RUSA Conference Programs

Don Boozer RUSA Conference Program Coordinating Committee (CPCC) Chair,

We’re planning now for 2016 ALA Annual Conference Orlando, FL June 23-28, 2016 That’s 1 year, 5 months, and 16 days away from today

Timetable So from here, we can almost see the conference for which we’re planning …

Program Submissions Early 2015 May June June 2016 FINAL PROGRAM SUBMISSION DEADLINE! DEADLINE for RUSA budget request, too. RUSA opens program submissions RUSA approves final slate of programs You’re onstage in Orlando at ALA 2016

RUSA Program Slots 10 total slots allotted to RUSA (same as Annual 2015) 10 – 4 = 6

RUSA Program Slots 4 guaranteed RUSA programs – RA Research & Trends Forum – Annual Reference Research Forum – RUSA/AFL-CIO joint committee program – Literary Tastes NOTE: THESE STILL NEED TO BE SUBMITTED BY SECTIONS (when appropriate)!! 10 – 4 = 6

RUSA Program Slots 6 remaining slots 1 “guaranteed” slot for each section – BRASS, CODES, HS, MARS, RSS, STARS 10 – 4 = 6

RUSA Program Slots 1 “guaranteed” slot for each section: BRASS, CODES, HS, MARS, RSS, STARS A section needs to designate their submission for their “guaranteed” slot when submitting their program…

RUSA Program Slots 1 “guaranteed” slot for each section BRASS, CODES, HS, MARS, RSS, STARS Consider *collaboration* with another section! (2 slots for the price of 1?)

RUSA Program Slots 1 “guaranteed” slot for each section BRASS, CODES, HS, MARS, RSS, STARS The majority of program planning & evaluation will take place at the section level.

RUSA Program Slots 1 “guaranteed” slot for each section BRASS, CODES, HS, MARS, RSS, STARS CPCC will work with you and help in shepherding your submission through the approval process.

RUSA Program Slots 1 “guaranteed” slot for each section BRASS, CODES, HS, MARS, RSS, STARS …but wait, there’s more…

RUSA Program Slots If a section decides to… not submit a program… change program to a webinar… collaborate with another section… do discussion forums… …that opens up "competitive" slots

RUSA Program Slots “Competitive" Slots… If a section submits multiple programs: -ONE should be designated the “first” choice to fill “their” slot. -Additional submissions will be considered and evaluated*if* competitive slots open up.

What makes a good program? Remember… Your program is your section’s representative.

What makes a good program? Be as complete as possible in your submission. It makes things easier for everyone… including you!

What makes a good program? Consider the following criteria: Timely and relevant topic for membership Topic is not already, or has not been recently, addressed by another RUSA program Expertise of speaker(s) Clearly articulated program objectives Secured funding (if required) Projected good attendance? If your section has not presented a program recently… you really should.

Money? Can we pay a speaker? The definite answer is … “Maybe”

Money? Can we pay a speaker? Librarians and ALA members cannot be paid to speak at a program (per ALA rules).

Money? Can we pay a speaker? Funding to pay a non-librarian or non-member *could* be requested in your submission, but RUSA is *not* obligated to use division funds.

Money? Can we pay a speaker? If funds for a speaker are requested, it is best to keep the costs *low* (Think honorarium, not flight/hotel/meals/etc.). It will more likely be approved.

Money? Can we pay a speaker? Each financial request will be considered by CPCC and RUSA on a case-by-case basis.

Questions?

Don Boozer RUSA Conference Program Coordinating Committee (CPCC) Chair,
