America…America…This is You**  James Madison and Henry Clay looked to promote the American System to help America grow without foreign markets and included:  Protective Tariffs to encourage American goods  Establish a national bank to promote a single currency and trade  Improve transportation to help make trade easier and improve the economy

Reunited and it feels so good  A National Road began to be established to link the nation together for transportation  Canal Systems were also established to help link the nation’s waterways to promote trade  The Erie Canal was created to link the Ohio river valley to the great lakes and increased New York Cities Population  Steam Engines on trains also led to an increase in the rail systems which increased to 9000 miles of rail by the 1850s

Full Court Press  As nationalism grew in the United States grew, James Monroe became president eliminating the Federalist Party  During the Era of Good Feelings, the federal government became stronger including the supreme court decision McColloch v. Maryland (1819) and Gibbons v. Ogden (1824)  McColloch v. Maryland said states could not Tax national Banks  Gibbons v. Ogden brought interstate commerce under the control of the National Government

Movin’ on Up  Nationalism led to expanding boundaries in the United States eliminating naval presence in the great lakes and setting the Canadian border at the 49 th parallel  As relations with Britain improved Spain became a problem in southern Florida  Andrew Jackson invaded Florida to defeat the Seminoles and claimed Florida for the United States  After the Invasion Spain turned over control of Florida to the United States and Also gave up their Claims in Oregon

LONG Division  As nationalism brought the country together, sectionalism was driving it apart  Different economies in the South, the North, and West led to disagreements on national policy  Sectionalism became an issue as Missouri threatened to disturb the slave/nonslave state balance

America loves Compromises  Both the north and the south worried that Missouri could Lead to a anti or pro slavery majority in congress  Henry Clay announced the Missouri Compromise allowing Maine as a Free State and Missouri as a Slave State  The compromise also set a border in the Louisiana territory at the 36 th parallel so separate slave and free states  The compromise was seen as a success, but Thomas Jefferson believed the compromise foretold the onset of a divided nation

Monroe Doctrine….He must work at the Minute Clinic or something  The United States began to see foreign presence in Latin America as a future problem in the United States  The Russian Presence in the west also worried the United States  To solve both problems James Monroe issued the Monroe Doctrine which outlawed future colonization in the Americas  It also pledged the United States would stay out of European Problems as long as they stayed out of America  The Monroe Doctrine made the United States a world Power and Protector in the Americas
