Vincenzo Artale ENEA Energy and Environment Modeling, ENEA Technical Unit (UTMEA, CR Casaccia, Rome (Italy) Research and Technology activities at ENEA ORIENTED TO CLIMATE SERVICE

ENEA mission on climate issue: To understand and predict changes in Earth’s environment by: The analysis of in situ and satellite data and developing numerical climate modeling of the Earth Systems and in particular of the Mediterranean Region; To conserve and manage natural resources by: The development of modeling tools/technological platform to fill the gap between RD&D results and market applications; To meet economic, social, and environmental needs by: Elaboration of integrated mitigation and adaptation strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change and to keep citizens informed of the changing environment around them;

Climate Risk the need for more regionally (locally) detailed information of important climate variables (e.g. temperature and precipitation) reducing the the uncertainty of the climate response from human forcing when the integrated assessments is adopted the climate policies must encompass and incorporate increasing the complexity of the integrated system model (ISM) ENEA - UTMEA

the ISM at MIT the future evolution of Protheus? see Schlosser et al., J.of Climate, may 2013

Impacts in key areas Here are some examples of the impacts of climate change on Italy in key areas Energy (Loading of the network) Tourism (snow cover) Sea Level Rise (coastal management) Water Supply (Sanitation) and Hydrology of Civil Infrastructures and River runoff Terrestrial ecosystems ENEA - UTMEA

DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM The technological systems, the "environmental” system, the economic-productive and the social are strongly interdependent. Disturbance to the technological systems (power grid, telecommunications network, transport network, etc..) such as reductions in service until blackouts, can have significant impacts on the social system of that of the production of goods and services, on the system "environment”. At the same time, "disturbances" or events on the environmental system, on the social and productive produce more or less significant impact on the system infrastructure

This interdependence requires the use of appropriate tools for scenario analysis, programming and intervention planning, predicting crisis scenarios related to natural events, the assessment of impacts of the crisis scenarios, taking into account the effects induced by global phenomena of interdependence between systems; The management of emergency situations, The decision support system (DSS), These instruments of new generation, require the fullest possible knowledge of the environmental, social and productive infrastructure of a region. ENEA - UTMEA

Le smart cities, area… ENEA - UTMEA

Le smart cities, area… that is an integrated approach of the city (area, region…) functions, and related technologies for the purpose of provide new and better services to citizens, improve the efficiency of production systems to make services more efficient the whole "system of systems" through its integrated management basically, the idea of Smart City is a development of ideas and technologies on several fronts: in the promotion, within each function (energy, mobility, construction, economy, environment, social participation) and efficient use of advanced systems capable of increasing the quality and quantity of services provided to citizens in order to increase the benefits received, also by the integration of data and simulations. ENEA - UTMEA

the main area of research The City Modeling develops a model-based approach on the scale of the whole city, The sector Urban Networks has the objective of intelligent and efficient management of energy networks and urban utilities (electrical, thermal, digital services, transport….) and to offer new services for the citizen and for the utilities of the city, The Smart Buildings sector aims at developing an optimal design and management of the building to reduce the energy consumption, The Supply Technologies sector where research is more focused on the components and especially on components for the production of renewable energy suited to the urban area (heat pumps, solar energy, biomass, geothermal, waste valorisation, wind-energy….) ENEA - UTMEA
