Presentation transcript:

Welcome Parents! I am Mrs. Sermons and I teach your child Advanced Math 1 (Cartoon web address on last slide)

My information: (on All assignments are posted on tcsermons.weebly.com no http, no www (also on your hand out.)tcsermons.weebly.com This is my 27 th year at Byrd. Advanced Math is offered as a dual credit class. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certified. I also sponsor the Z-Club. 2

Class Supplies are listed on the handout. The class fee is $5. You may pay on line at or go to the the Byrd website, and follow the link. Students may also pay in class. They are due by September 10 th. The senior counselor is Amanda Byrd and the junior counselor is Robin Bagley. You may sign up for Byrd updates at 3

Your child must have a calculator at home. This is Advanced Math. We don’t want them to get bogged down in mechanics and lose the ideas. Also some times they just really need a calculator! This is the BEST one, if you need to buy one (I have a class set.) 4 (Calculator web address on last slide)

Tutoring, Make Up Procedures: I will be available immediately after school for tutoring. Make ups will be on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday mornings (7:45) He or she should make it up during the current week, or the next. After that, the next week is 10% off, after that 20% off. 5

All Ad Math lessons are PowerPoint presentations that I post on WEEBLY. Your child can use them to clarify and explain the day’s lesson, help him or her to review for a test, or to catch up from being absent. We will look at the web site in a moment. We usually have an Active Learning Assignment (formerly known as homework) every day that we meet. How important is doing the assignments? Wow, what a loaded question! No one can be successful in this class without doing the assignments. 6

Students learn by doing. The most powerful thing that you can do to help your child to be successful is to make sure he or she stays on top of assignments. Everyone can do well in my class, if they do the work assigned. I don’t check it everyday, so it is easy to get in the habit of not doing it. It is a matter of the first layer of understanding vs. learning. We want to encourage good habits. So, please make sure he or she has the time and a place to complete it. You can check WEEBLY to see what was assigned. 7

When are we ever going to use this? My answer? EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE! Math is about logic, problem solving, reasoning, and patterns. These are skills that I want your children to use to learn. I want to teach them to think-I can’t “learn” them. I want what’s best for your child. Please call or with any concerns. Your responsibility? Again, check on their assignments and their progress. Let’s look at WEEBLY!
