Welcome to class! If you took a book yesterday, PLEASE return it. I am already missing two.

4 Corners Activity You will be forced to take a stand! This is to get you thinking about some of the big ideas in the book. For each controversial statement, you will stand in the corner of the room describing how you feel: strongly agree, strongly disagree, mostly agree, mostly disagree. You MUST choose a side! Once you are in that group, your group will have 30 seconds to discuss your reasoning and choose a group spokesperson to describe your position to the class. You MUST be respectful of each others’ opinions. Please keep your opinions school appropriate and free of hate—be sensitive. Use evidence and examples to back up what you say!

Women today are more often treated by men as equals rather than objects.

A true friend will tell you the truth, even when you don’t want to hear it.

People should not allow their friends to become burdens.

Women need friends more than men do.

It is more acceptable for women to love their female friends than it is for men to love their male friends.

Of the many feelings that hurt – grief, anger, resentment, jealousy, loneliness – loneliness hurts the most.

If a person has a dream to cling to, s/he can survive against the odds.

The best place for justice to be determined is in a court of law.

Dreaming is for dreamers, and dreamers go nowhere. Be real.

There are times when euthanasia (mercy killing) can be justified.

The n-word is more offensive than other racial slurs because of the history of hate behind it.

Sometimes a person has to break the law to make sure justice is served.

Being rich is more important than having close friends.

When people are a victim of a crime, they should be able to take the law into their own hands.

People that are poor should rely on their friends, family, or church for help, not the government.

Pick any statement from today and explain WHY you support that idea, belief or statement. Your explanation should be at least 5 sentences and you MUST use at least one example from the book to back up your point. Women today are more often treated by men as equals rather than objects.
