Week 1 Computing GCSE

2.1.1 Fundamentals of Computer Systems define a computer system describe the importance of computer systems in the modern world explain the need for reliability in computer systems explain the need for adherence to suitable professional standards in the development, use and maintenance of computer systems explain the importance of ethical, environmental and legal considerations when creating computer systems.

What is a computer system? A computer system is made up of hardware and software components and is capable of: data input - using input devices http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVlL9yCxpLw data processing - using a microprocessor, typically the Central Processing Unit (CPU) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHAso1yM-D4&feature=related data output - using output devices It may also be capable of: data storage - so data can be stored for later use data transmission - so data can be transferred to another computer system As well as the personal computer, this definition applies to any equipment which uses computer technology. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaHfVAbQJgY

Task Create a poster to show examples of different computer systems. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz2vdx_-ft8

Task In pairs, choose one of the computer systems on your poster, and research how it’s function was carried out before computer technology was introduced. Present your findings on a PPt to the rest of the class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7142mL9-f8

Task http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR_zKXfEiHo Find a story on the internet of computer and answer the questions. What was the failure? Why did it happen? What could be done to prevent it? Present your findings to the class in the form of a news programme interview.
