NC Geologic History

Blue Ridge Belt  This mountainous region is composed of rocks from over 1 billion to ~1/2 billion years old.  Mixture of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock has been squeezed, fractured, faulted and twisted into folds.

Inner Piedmont Belt  The metamorphic rocks here range from 500 to 750 million years in age.  The Brevard fault zone forms the boundary between the Blue Ridge and Inner Piedmont belts.

Charlotte Belt  This belt consists mostly of igneous rocks such as granite, diorite and gabbro.  These are million years old.

Carolina Slate Belt  This belt consists of heated and deformed volcanic sedimentary rocks.  It was the site of oceanic volcanic islands about million years.ago

Eastern Slate Belt  This belt contains slightly metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks.  The metamorphic rocks, million years old, are intruded by ~300 million year old, granite rocks.

Coastal Plain  The Coastal Plain is a wedge of mostly marine sedimentary rocks that gradually thickens to the east.  It is the largest geologic belt in the state, covering ~ 45% percent of the state’s land area. %20figures.pdf

Warm-up 10/15/13 1. Where does magma come from? 2. What was the eruption of the Paricutin volcano (Paricutin, Mexico) made of? 3. Mount Pinatubo is located in the chain of volcanoes known as the _________ of _______ 4. How was Crater Lake formed? 5. How do diamonds reach Earth’s surface?

Creating NC geologic timeline With your partner use the time table provided to create a timeline of NC’s geologic history You need to include:  Title  Timeline  At least 10 drawings of NC geologic events listed [use your book as a reference]
