Measuring Matter

Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space

Mass The amount of matter in an object Measured in grams or kilograms Measured by a triple beam balance

How is mass different from weight? Weight can change, mass doesn’t For example, you weigh less underwater than you do on land. But your mass stays the same. What happens to your weight when you go into space??

Using a Triple Beam Balance Place an object on the left side of the balance. Move the three different weights until the lines on the right match Add the three weights together What mass is shown here? 373.5 grams

Units of Measurement Volume of Regular Object = cm³ (cubic centimeter) m³ (cubic meter) Volume of Irregular Object= mL (mililiter) L (liter) Mass= g (gram) kg (kilogram) Density= -g/mL -g/ cm³

Volume The amount of space matter occupies How to find the volume of a regular object: length x width x height Mention difference between area and volume; 2-dimensional vs 3-dimensional

Your Turn What is the volume of a piece of wood that is 11 cm long, 2 cm wide, and 2 cm high? 44 cm³ What is the volume of this cereal box? 22 cm ⃡ ↕ 35cm ⃡ Notice units are cubed 5 cm 3850 cm³

Volume of an Irregular Object Fill a graduated cylinder with water Measure the water level Place the object into the water Measure the water level now New water level -Old water level

Your Turn 38-32= 6mL What is the water level at first? 32 mL What is the new water level? 38 mL 38-32= 6mL

40-30= 10 mL What is the water level at first? 30 mL What is the new water level? 40 mL 40-30= 10 mL

Density Density=mass/volume How much matter there is in a certain amount of space Density=mass/volume Which square is more dense? 3 cm 3 cm Mass- 5 g Mass- 20 g

Density 27 cm³ 27 cm³ 3 cm 3 cm Volume= 3x3x3 Volume= 3x3x3 Mass=5 g Density=5/27 0.18 g/cm³ Mass=20 g Density=20/27 0.74 g/cm³

Your Turn George has a watch. It has a mass of 16g and a volume of 4mL. What is its density? 4 g/mL Joshua has a wallet. It has a mass of 20g, and a volume of 4 mL. What is its density? 5 g/mL

Your Turn Melissa has a book. It has a mass of 275g and a volume of 588cm3. What is its density? 0.46 g/cm³ Melissa also has a notebook. It has a mass of 279g, and a volume of 456 cm3. What is its density? 0.61 g/cm³
