October Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy sign a treaty of cooperation July 7, 1937 Japan invades China, initiating World War II in the Pacific. Timeline March 31, 1939 France and Great Britain guarantee the integrity of the borders of the Polish state September 3, 1939 Honoring their guarantee of Poland’s borders, Great Britain and France declare war on Germany. HOWEVER...

Had France attacked Germany in a serious way as promised, the results could have been very serious, if not disastrous for the Germans. Instead, Hitler was able to win a complete victory over Poland and then mobilize his forces for a devastating offensive in the west in the next year. France fell soon after....June 22, 1940

Question Why did Great Britain and France finally declare war on Germany in September 1939? They had pledged to defend Poland against Hitler, who attacked it from the West.
