Wikis

Some resources  What is a wiki:  How do you make a PBWorks account: account.mp4  Assignment for Thursday Assignment

What is a Wiki? A multi-authored, collaborative web site. As with any web site, it has a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) a.k.a. web address.

What is PBWorks? A tool for creating wikis. A web space for publishing wikis.

What is a wiki made of?  Handcrafted web pages that MAY be linked together.  No magic. You create each page using text, pictures, and links.  The design and formatting are also manually crafted and may require using a bit of HTML code.

Some PBWorks Terms  Workspaces/wikis  Pages and Files  Edit vs. View  Page History  FrontPage

Terms: Workspaces  Spaces on the PBWorks server that hold content (i.e., the files you upload, the pages you create).  One account can have several spaces, each with its own user list.  Each workspace has a web address: Example:

Terms: Pages and Files  Files: any computer files you upload to your workspace: image files, text files, video or audio files, spreadsheet files, etc.  Pages: what you create by: typing or pasting in text, inserting images, or creating links to other pages in your wiki, or files, or external web pages.

Terms: View vs. Edit  View: how an outsider sees it – the “read only” version. Edit: how the author sees it – the one with the editing icons.

Terms: Page History  Every change, by every writer, on every page.  Click on the link to see what was changed and who made the change.

Terms: FrontPage  The top or opening page of the wiki where you will build your Table of Contents.  Yes, you can change the name.

Editing Wiki Pages  Basic tools  Table  Link  Source

Editing: Basic Tools  Bold, italics, underline  Bullet or numbered list  Indent paragraph  Left, center, right align text  Undo  Font styles

Editing: Tables  Not just for blocks of text. Tables are the easiest (and in wikis often the only) way to align elements on a page. For example, to place a caption directly under a picture: Mount Mansfield, Vermont. September 29, Photo by Hope Greenberg.

Editing: Links

Editing: Source (code)

Wiki Roles  Researcher (everyone)  Writer (everyone)  Editor (everyone or designated)  Proofreader (everyone read each others)  Designer (all input, one person finalize?)  Manager (keep everyone on track)

Communication and Admin  MOU?  How will the group handle…  Keep an “Updates” wiki page
