NRI Survey on: Cooperation between universities and university hospitals On behalf of NRI: Lars Hvilsted Rasmussen Director of Research Aalborg University Hospital, Head of Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Aalborg University

Respondents: – Nordic medical faculty deans and university hospital directors – 44 % replies – Replies are almost equal in all the Nordic countries Position: – 40% Medical faculty deans – 40% University hospital directors – 20% Regional hospital leaders Institution groups: – 40% Medical faculties – 45% University hospitals – 15% Regional health authorities The survey

Physically: – Few are fully integrated – More than half are moderately integrated Integration between universities and university hospitals?

Administration: – 75 % have a low degree of administrative integration Integration between universities and university hospitals?

Finance: – 90 % have little or no financial integration Integration between universities and university hospitals?

Management: – 45 % representatives from the university in the board of the university hospital – 60 % representatives from the university hospital in the board of the university Integration between universities and university hospitals?

Information Informal information is regarded as most important Half of the respondents feel that they are poorly informed about their collaborating institution

Important factors to optimize the relationship between the faculty/hospital

Cooperation – status and importance

Summary of the survey Management – 60% University Hospital representation in faculty boards – 45% University Faculty representation in hospital boards

Summary of the survey Cooperation – between university hospitals and medical faculties is very important – More than 90% evaluates that cooperation is crucial – Only half considers it to function optimal – Interest for improvement

My conclusion Collaboration between university hospitals and medical faculties in the Nordic countries is evaluated by deans and directors to be very important The Deans and Directors Meeting could be a forum for further improvement
