THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION l Is a FEDERAL FUNDING agency with a ~$4.8B budget in FY 2002 (94% awarded) l Works primarily through grants to US UNIVERSITIES and COLLEGES l Does not own or operate institutes l Supports BASIC research and education in science/engineering l Supports the U.S. portion of international collaborations
