Chapter 2: Lesson 1&2 What are physical and chemical changes? By: Devon

Physical Changes  Physical changes are in size, shape, volume, and state of matter.  Sawing wood, shredding paper, and melting wax are all physical changes. Copper can be hammered into sheets, and gemstones carved into beautiful shapes as a result.  In each case, the substance does not change into something else.

Chemical changes  A chemical change occurs when one kind of matter changes into another type of matter with different properties.  Cooking a potato is one example of a chemical change. So is rusting iron.  It’s not always easy to tell when a chemical reaction occurs. Changes can cause heat, light, sound, and fizzing.
