The Nervous System The brain relays messages by way of the spinal cord through nerve fibers. Nerves radiate to every part of the body to provide connections.

Spinal Cord (Handout) prof. aza. Figure 04a Spinal Cord The spinal cord (Figure 04a) lies along the middorsal line of the body It has two main functions:
Spinal Cord: Meninges The spinal meninges (dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater) are layers of connective tissue that protect the spinal cord and.
Spinal Cord and Spinal Nerves. Spinal Cord Enclosed in the vertebral canal, extends from the foramen magnum of the skull to the first or second lumbar.
The Nervous System. Objectives At the end of the lecture, the students should be able to: List the subdivisions of the nervous system Define the terms:
Meninges and Spinal Cord

The Nervous System: Spinal Cord and Spinal Nerves.
Spinal Cord and Nerves. The Nervous System Coordinates the activity of muscles, organs, senses, and actions Made up of nervous tissue Has 3 main functions:
Spinal Cord. 42 cm long (17 inches) and 1.8 cm thick 42 cm long (17 inches) and 1.8 cm thick Provides two way conduction pathway to and from the brain.
Spinal cord injuries: Paraplegia: paralysis of both lower limbs Quadriplegia: paralysis of all 4 limbs  Complete transection: loss of all sensations and.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). PNS  Cranial nerves (12 pairs)  Spinal Nerves (31 pairs)
Spinal Cord, Spinal Nerves, and Somatic Reflexes.
Spinal Cord and Nerves.  Adult spinal cord is 18 inches long and 14 mm wide  Spinal cord does not continue in length with the vertebrae; stops at L1.

Spinal Cord Location Function

Meninges (for CNS) Meninx Primitiva – protective covering in fish Leptomeninx, - thin inner membrane in higher vertebrates Dura Mater – outer thick membrane in higher vertebrates

Meninges Leptomeninx splits in mammals only, into: Pia mater – inner Arachnoid – middle Subarachnoid space contains Cerebrospinal fluid

Key Points Why is meningitis a life-threatening disease?

Spinal cord Gray matter contains nuclei, nonmyelinated neurons, at center of spinal cord White matter contains myelinated ascending and descending tracts, at peripheral spinal cord

Spinal Nerves Show metamerism & carry information to & from spinal cord Cauda equina – caudal-most set of spinal nerves resembling a horse’s tail

Spinal Nerves Occipitospinal nerves In anamniotes Innervate hypobranchial muscles Motor only

Spinal Nerves Spinal nerves are mixed nerves with: Dorsal root carrying sensory information Ventral root carrying motor information

Key Points Are spinal nerves CNS or PNS?

Spinal Nerves Spinal nerves branch into dorsal branch supplying epaxial muscles called Dorsal Ramus And ventral branch supplying hypaxial muscles called Ventral Ramus

Spinal Nerves Adjacent spinal nerves for networks or plexuses when supplying limbs
