Comparing DNA Aim: How can we compare organisms using gel electrophoresis? Do Now: Write two observations from your results of gel electrophoresis.

Gel Electrophoresis is used to compare the similarity of DNA DNA is cut into fragments (pieces) using Restriction Enzymes These different sized fragments are placed into wells (holes) along the top of the gel An electric current is sent through the gel The fragments of DNA move down the gel Large fragments stay at the top, small fragments go to the bottom Compare the ‘band’ pattern to find similarities

Gel Electrophoresis is used to compare the similarity of DNA Research method of separating molecules (DNA, protein, RNA) through a gel by their physical and chemical properties.
