A Whole new World  As England defeat Spain they plan colonies in the Americas  Guided by Mercantilism, England hoped to gain trade markets in the new world and a new supply of raw materials  Others Hoped to gain opportunity, gold, or religious freedom

Meet Virginia  England sets up the colony of Virginia through Sir Walter Raleigh at present day Roanoke  When Native Americans feared losing their land they cut off Roanoke’s food supply  As Roanoke tried to re-establish itself, Native Americans would defend their land

Plymouth Rock…and roll  The Plymouth Company would try to establish a colony in Maine  Sagadahoc would be founded with convicts from English jails  Harsh winters, Food Shortages, and Fights with Native Americans led to Plymouth’s Failure

Taking stock of a situation  Learning that ONE person could not finance a colony, Joint Stock Companies  Investors would fund the colonies and share the profits and losses  England Would issue charters to the Virginia companies of London and Plymouth

This is OUR town  The Virginia Company would send 100 settlers to found Jamestown  Diseases and the Search for gold ravaged the colony as they neglected to build houses or grow food  Humidity and Cold also added to the early failure as a colony

Tobacco Road  John Smith would arrive in Jamestown and turned it into a hard working colony  As Native Americans stopped trading food with settlers, the starving times left Jamestown with 60 Settlers  Tobacco, created by John Rolfe, would transform Jamestown, but leave colonists seeking a share of the profits

Rocky Marriage  As Jamestown grew, John Rolfe would marry Pocahontas to improve relationships with the Powhatan tribe  As Native Americans lost more land, the Powhatan tribe would kill 100’s of Jamesown settlers

Power to the People  As Settlers bought shares of land in the new colonies, and as Africans came to Jamestown, the population more than tripled  Those who could not afford land would become Indentured Servants to earn their own way in the colony  After becoming upset with the governor of Jamestown they demanded representation  The House of Burgesses would represent the people and become the first representational government

Shake’n Bacon  Former Indentured Servants begin to resent Wealthy Landowners and try to gain land from Native Americans  Nathanial Bacon tried to urge William Berkley to approve a war against Native Americans for land and plantations  Bacon’s Rebellion led to a revolt on Jamestown but also led to the death’s of Bacons Followers  The House of Burgesses would pass laws to help end Tyranny and plant the seeds of independence
