Welcome to the ABCs of Kindergarten

A  Absences: Please send a note explaining your child’s absence on the day he/she returns to school.  Agendas: Agendas will be primarily used for parent notes/communication. All other information will be communicated by behavior calendar, homework calendar and class newsletters.  Assessments: We conduct benchmark assessments on all students 3 times per year. This is quite a lengthy process but will help ensure we have an accurate idea of where your child stands academically. We will be conferencing on your child’s progress in lieu of the first 9 week report card.

B  Birthdays: We recognize all birthdays as they occur. Cupcakes or other snacks in honor of your child are always accepted. All snacks and treats must be store bought and free of any peanut butter or tree nuts!  Binder: Please check your child’s binder daily for homework, notes, and other important information.  Book-bags: Please no rolling book-bags.  Box Tops for Education: Please save your box tops and send them in a Ziploc bag. Our school redeems them for educational materials.  Breakfast: Please make sure your child starts their day with eating a healthy breakfast! Breakfast is served in the cafeteria and costs $1.25.

C  Changes: Please notify us of any changes throughout the school year pertaining to address, phone number, deployments or family changes, bus, baby sitter, etc…  Change of clothes: Please send in a change of clothes for your child in a Ziploc bag. These will remain in their bookbag. Label the Ziploc with your child’s name. This is very important in case your child has an accident. Please match the clothes with the season.  Conferences: We will have 2 required conference this year to discuss your child’s academic progress. Please notify your child’s teacher if you would like to meet additionally to this conference.  Check outs: Only parents, guardians or designee can check out a child. Picture ID will be needed.  ***Classroom store: Students will shop in the classroom store on Friday’s. We are ALWAYS accepting donations of miniature to small sized toys that are new or gently used. Thank you so much for helping us to provide rewards for your child’s good behavior.

D  Discipline: A copy of a classroom management plan should be given to each parent at the beginning of the year. Please let teachers know if you have any questions concerning the plan.

E  Early Dismissal: If school should be delayed or dismissed early due to inclement weather, please listen to the broadcast on the local radio, TV stations and Onslow County Schools website at

F  Field Trips: Individuals who wish to go on a field trip with their child’s class must be fingerprinted at the county office before the field trip. Information on how to be fingerprinted can be obtained at the front office. We will send information home as needed for field trips. Parents may go on field trips with their child without being fingerprinted, but can only accompany their own child. They must provide their own transportation to/from the field trip. If you take your child with you once you arrive back to the school, you must check him/her out.

G  Good behavior: Good behavior will be expected, demonstrated and rewarded. Students will be rewarded school incentives in order to promote positive behavior!

H  Homework: Completing homework is an area that is reflected on our Kindergarten Progress report. Please help your child develop the responsibility of returning homework promptly the next day.

I  Illness: Please keep your child home when they are ill. If symptoms include fever, vomiting or diarrhea, they will be unable to return to school for 24 hours after the last episode.

J  Juggling our schedule: Please refer to your child’s specials’ calendar that will be sent home by your child’s teacher at the beginning of the year. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately for PE that day.

K  Kindergarten Health Assessments: You MUST turn in your child’s Kindergarten Health Assessment as soon as possible. They will not be allowed to remain in school after 30 days, if you have not turned it in or if their immunizations are not up to date. If you have any questions, please contact your School Nurse.

L  Late arrivals or early dismissals: If your child arrives after 8:25 am, you must sign in at the front office and receive a pass. If you check your child our early, sign out in the office and they will call the classroom and we will send your child to the office. Your child will be considered absent if they are checked out prior to 11:30.  Lunch: Lunch is $2.25 a day; milk is $.50 if your child brings their lunch and would like to purchase milk. You can pay for your child’s lunch daily, weekly or monthly. You will also be able to pay online for your child’s lunch. ***YOUR CHILD MAY BRING THEIR LUNCH TO SCHOOL IN KINDERGARTEN WITHOUT A DOCTOR’S NOTE – HOWEREVER IT MUST BE PEANUT/TREENUT FREE.

M  Medications: If your child must take prescription medication at school, you must fill out “The Administration of Medication Form” which can be picked up and returned to the school nurse. NEVER send your child to school with medicine. A parent must bring it to the office.  Moment of Silence: We observe a moment of silence each morning.  Money: Money needs to be placed in a Ziploc bag and placed in your child’s homework binder

N  North Carolina’s Essential Standards Nationwide Common Core: We follow and incorporate the North Carolina Common Core guidelines into our Curriculum.

O  Opportunities: Your child’s first year of school is all about involving family into the learning environment. There will be many opportunities for parental involvement. Please make sure you are fingerprinted through the county office prior to volunteering your time.

P  Physical Education: Please make certain your child wears tennis shoes on PE days.  Pledge: The Pledge of Allegiance is included in our morning routine.

Q  A good QUALITY night’s rest is essential to your child’s learning potential.

R  Reading: This is a major focus in our classroom. Skills must be reinforced at home in order for your child to be on grade level by the end of the year. If an assignment is made for your child to study his/her reading word list, please support that assignment.

S  Snack: Your child will need to bring a snack that is peanut/treenut free each day. If you send any type of food that requires a spoon or fork, please provide it for your child.

T  Tardies: Students are marked tardy and will need a tardy note from the office if they arrive to class after 8:15 a.m. Students who ride a bus or daycare van will not be marked tardy for late arrival.  Toys: Students are not to bring toys to school unless they have been given an assignment that the toy could be used for.  Transportation: Please remember to notify the school IN WRITING of any transportation changes for your child.

U  Utilizing car time is essential for your child’s growth. Ways you can do this are having them count, spell, read road signs, find environmental print, skip count, ask open- ended questions that are not yes/no answers.  United: Working together to ensure the success of all learners.

V  Visitors: All visitors must sign in at the office and receive a pass before coming to the classroom. This is for the safety of our children. If you are coming to drop something off for your child, you may leave it at the office and they will notify the teacher.  Volunteers: All volunteers must go through a fingerprinting process before helping in the classroom. Some children do not function to their potential when parents are in the room. In this case, we would love to utilize you in other areas of the school.

W  Wall of Fame: Showcasing your child’s work from school in your home let’s them know education is important to you and they are important to you.  Website: Your child’s teacher and school website is a wonderful resource you can access throughout the year to stay up to date on all information!  Writing: The children will participate in many writing activities this year. It is an integral part of our curriculum and the students will begin writing the first week of school.

X  Kindergarten students are eXtra special!

Y  You: You are your child’s first and most important teacher. You are the most important person in your child’s life and we would like to say thank you for sharing this special time with us. Kindergarten is a very special place where often a child’s educational attitude is set. It is our desire that all the children will want to be here and share the wonderful discoveries we will make this year.

Z  Now let’s ZOOM into the Kindergarten year!
