Diversity – Why Bother?

What is Diversity? Definition: The condition or quality of being diverse; unlikeness; a difference, distinction; variety. Diversity training is not just about what race, culture, nationality or ethnicity is, it is about exploring our value system and how we respond to others who do not share our values or beliefs.

Remember…. It’s not what you say, it’s how it’s received

So, why bother? A diversity friendly workplace encourages colleagues to feel valued, accepted and motivated to Dept goals

The first female governor to sue the Prison Service was awarded £6000 compensation after an industrial tribunal was told she was called ‘the bag lady’ by her male colleagues.

Coca-Cola paid out a record £140m to settle a racial discrimination suit brought by 2000 African-American employees, who alleged they had been systematically held back from promotions and pay rises.

Asda has been forced to pay compensation to a group of workers who accused the company of racial discrimination. An Asda manager called out their ‘foreign-sounding names’ over a public address system in an attempt to ensure that the company was not employing illegal immigrants. The 37 Asian workers were ordered to produce documents to prove they had the right to work in Britain. Some of them had been with the company for 18 years.
