Nouns Nouns are defined as a PERSON, PLACE, THING or IDEA. A PROPER NOUN names a specific person, place or thing. (Mr. Lucero, NBHS, Pacific Ocean) A COMMON NOUN names a general person, place or thing. (principal, school, ocean)

ABSTRACT NOUNS Nouns that are IDEAS, or ABSTRACT NOUNS, are things which are not tangible (cannot be touched). Warmth, justice, happiness, love, democracy, anger, hatred, etc., are all ABSTRACT NOUNS.

CONCRETE NOUNS Concrete nouns are those things which can be experienced with your five senses: you can see them, smell them, feel them, taste them, or hear them. Ice cream, chair, deer, quad, etc. are all CONCRETE NOUNS.

CATEGORIES OF NOUNS COUNT NOUNS, which name anything that can be counted (FIVE books, THREE oceans, A FEW dishes, SEVERAL buildings). Count nouns can be pluralized (girls, boys, chairs) Count nouns can use “many” (many girls, many boys, many chairs) Count nouns can use “a few” (a few girls, a few boys, a few chairs) Count nouns can use “some” (some girls, some boys, some chairs)

MASS NOUNS, which name things that cannot be counted (chalk, blood, air, energy). Mass nouns are not pluralized (you don’t say “chalks” or “airs”) Mass nouns use “much” (much energy, much chalk, much blood) Mass nouns use “a little” (a little energy, a little blood)

COLLECTIVE NOUNS COLLECTIVE NOUNS, which are single words that mean a group of people or things (jury, team, class, committee, herd)
