The Effects, Events, and Causes of the Civil War By: Malorie Little All fun facts are in RED!!!

Fort Sumter: The Civil War began here! Fort Sumter was in South Carolina and South Carolina was the first state to secede!!!

Gettysburg: A famous war fought here! Union won this battle!!!

William T. Sherman: Captured Atlanta! His nicknames were Cump, and Uncle Billy. He got them from his troop!!!

Appomattox Courthouse: Lee surrenders to Grant! This happened on April 9, 1865!!!

“March to the Sea”: Sherman went from Atlanta to Savannah! As he went he burned every single thing he came to till he reached Savannah, He gave Savannah to Abe Lincoln as a Christmas present!!!

Uncle Tom’s Cabin: Book about cruelty of slavery! It was published on March 20, 1852!!!

Harriet Beecher Stowe: wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin! She was 41 when she wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin!!!

Harper’s Ferry: convinced states to secede! As early as 1848 John Brown was formulating a plan to incite an insurrection on slavery!!!

John Brown: Abolitionist who raided Harper’s Ferry! Had 2 wives (remarried after one died), with 20 children!!! (that’s A LOT!!!)

States’ rights: States justified to secede! North Carolina was the last state to secede, and did so on May 20, 1861!!!

South: War was more devastating in the south because most wars took place here! As many as, 620,000 lost their lives during the civil war, and more people lost their lives due to sickness, than due to killed!!!

Jeff Davis: Was the president of the Confederacy! He was married to the daughter of the future president Zachary Taylor!!!

Ulysses S. Grant: commander of the Confederates! Grant couldn’t stand the sight of blood!!! (that’s weird since he has been in some of the bloodiest wars ever! )

Robert E. Lee: commander for the Confederates! Lee's last words were, “Strike the tent! ” !!!

Abe Lincoln: president during the civil war! Lincoln Under-Utilized his Pockets. He carried note, bills, and many other things in his hat!!!
