1 Cultural & Linguistic Adaptability & User Interface Technical Direction SC 2 Business Plan (Coded Character Sets) Kohji Shibano SC 2 Chair

ISO/IEC JTC 1 Cultural & Linguistic Adaptability & User Interface Technical Direction2 SC 2 Scope n Standardisation of graphic character sets and their characteristics, associated control functions, their coded representation for information interchange, and code extension techniques. Excluded: audio and picture coding n Two WGs –WG2 16 bit and 32 bit coding n –WG3 7 bit and 8 bit coding n coded character sets - 646, 6937, 8859 n code structure and code extension technique , 4873 n control functions n Registration procedure of coded character sets

ISO/IEC JTC 1 Cultural & Linguistic Adaptability & User Interface Technical Direction3 SC 2 Meetings & Members n Since last JTC 1 Plenary meeting in Rio - Plenary: March 1999, Fukuoka, Japan - WG 2: March 1999, Fukuoka, Japan - WG 2: September 1999, London, UK - WG 2: September 1999, London, UK - WG 3: September 1999, Denmark n 37 P Members (Ethiopia changed to O) n Future meetings –WG2, March 2000, China –SC2 Plenary, September 2000, Greece

ISO/IEC JTC 1 Cultural & Linguistic Adaptability & User Interface Technical Direction4 SC 2 Projects n NP: None n New Revision Work: 1 – –Revision of ISO 2375: 1986 n New Subprojects: 1 –ISO/IEC : Latin Alphabet No. 10 n Withdrawn project: 1 –TR Type 2: OCR-B Shape and dimensions

ISO/IEC JTC 1 Cultural & Linguistic Adaptability & User Interface Technical Direction5 SC 2 Achievements Since the last JTC 1 Plenary in January 1999: n Six amendments and one technical corrigendum to ISO/IEC : 1993 were published. n Five amendments of ISO/IEC :1993 were progressed to IS. n Six FPDAMs of ISO/IEC :1993 were progressed to FDAM. n 6937 and Latin/Thai were progressed to FCD. n Latin/Greek was progressed to CD.

ISO/IEC JTC 1 Cultural & Linguistic Adaptability & User Interface Technical Direction6 SC 2 Requirements n Provide easy access to SC 2 standards n Support for new character coding requirements from developing countries n Enhance visibility of SC 2 activities. –SC 2/WG 2 Charter (JTC1 N 5893) n Clarification of character coding schemes

ISO/IEC JTC 1 Cultural & Linguistic Adaptability & User Interface Technical Direction7 Opportunities and Risks n Opportunities –16 bit and 32 bit code including UTF-8 and UTF-16 n Sole standard (Unicode) adapted by all PCs, Unixes and the Internet n Risks –7 bit and 8 bit codes n ISO (ASCII) vs EBCDIC, SC2 vs ITU-T vs TC 46 vs Vendors n There are many vendor dialects based on national or application oriented versions. n Strategy n Rapid development to capture market needs and cooperation with industry (Unicode) are mandatory for the success.

ISO/IEC JTC 1 Cultural & Linguistic Adaptability & User Interface Technical Direction8 Work Priority n WG 2 16 bit and 32 bit –Second edition of – n WG 3 7 bit and 8 bit –Transfer of TC 46 coded character set standards n cooperative agreement based on resolutions of both committees.
