John Adams wins 71 electoral votes to T.J.’s 68! Constitution states that the runner up will be vice president! Uh oh….. *****Country has a Federalist President and a Democratic Republican Vice President! ****

Problems with France was seizing American ships to prevent them from trading with Britain. Seized over 300 American ships. Some wanted war, Adams wanted to talk things out.

XYZ Affair Adams sent over three American representatives to meet with the French foreign minister. The 3 French agents, referred to as X,Y,Z took the Americans aside and told them that they would only talk if America loaned France $10 million dollars and gave the foreign minister $250, 000.

Adams refused…. And in 1798 Congress cancelled treaties with France and allowed U.S. ships to seize French ships. Congress also expanded the army and navy.

This bold move made Adams and the Federalists Popular with the American public and Democrat Republicans until………
