This year’s subjects:

Reading This year we will be utilizing the 5 th grade Reading Wonders program. Students will read and annotate text more closely to deepen their understanding of the text. Students will work on citing evidence from the text to support their responses. Whole Group Instruction (Comprehension, Skills, Binder) Small Group Instruction (Reinforce weekly skills)

Language Arts Being A Writer Program: Focus is on a Writers Workshop Community. The genres being taught include: Personal Narrative, Fiction, Expository Nonfiction, Explanatory Writing, Opinion Writing, and Poetry.

Language Arts Grammar Instruction is integrated in the Reading Wonders program. Each student has a Grammar Binder.

Math My Math Grade 5 is being utilized in 5 th grade. We will focus on the following areas of instruction this year: * Place Value*Decimals *Multiplication*Measurement *Division*Geometry *Fractions * Order of Operations and Evaluating Expressions

Social Studies Split during the Trimester. ½ trimester for Social Studies and ½ trimester for Science Social Studies topics covered this year include: * Chapters 3-8 Explorers, Formation of the 13 Colonies, the American Revolution, and the 50 States

Science Science topics include: Chapter 2 Cells, Chapter 3 Body Systems, and Chapters11 and 12 Atoms, Matter, and the Periodic Table of Elements

Grading Scale

Standards Based Grading This year Standards Based Grading will be implemented in Fifth Grade. All graded work will be sent home for review through the use of a “Friday Folder.” Dr. O’Neill will be providing a Standards Based Grading Parent Academy Training on October 5 th, from 6:30 to 8:30 here at Harker. If you are unable to attend the information will be posted online for you to review.

Class Dojo I have 88% parent participation. This is a GREAT resource for us to communicate. In addition to posting progress reports on your child I post important facts and reminders. You can even send me private messages through Dojo.

Odds and Ends Snacks: Appropriate for school ( No blow pops, etc) Peanut and Tree Nut Free Environment Please note, birthday snacks are no longer allowed to be sent in.
