In 1797 while nominally governor of the colony, he expelled the French commissioner Louverture tried to rebuild the collapsed economy of Haiti and reestablish commercial contacts with the United States and Britain He died 10 months later, April 1803.

Jean-Jacques Dessalines  He was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1801 constitution.  He was autocratic in his rule and crowned himself Emperor of Haiti in  First black colony to free itself from European control.  Became first emperor of Haiti; later assassinated in a revolt.  After the betrayal and capture of Toussaint Louverture in 1802, Dessalines became the leader of the revolution.  He defeated French troops sent by Napoleon at the Battle of Vertières in  Declaring Haiti an independent nation in  He proclaimed himself Emperor and ruled in that capacity until being assassinated in 1806.

Miguel Hidalgo  Miguel Hidalgo, was a Mexican priest and a leader of the Mexican War of Independence.  A village priest, believed in Enlightenment ideals.  Spanish army and creoles acted against Hidalgo and defeated him in  Hidalgo's rebellion was the beginning of what would become the Mexican War of Independence.  In 1810 Hidalgo led a group of indigenous and mestizo peasants in a revolt against the dominant peninsulares under the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

 Both of Hidalgo's parents were descended from well respected families within the creole community.  Hidalgo's rights as a creole were far less than those of someone born in Spain but better than a mestizo. Eight days after his birth Hidalgo was baptized into the Roman Catholic faith in the parish church. Hidalgo is considered the Father of the Nation of Mexico. He died in July 30 of 1811.
