Nationalism

a feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries a desire by a large group of people (such as people who share the same culture, history, language, etc.) to form a separate and independent nation of their own

Impacts of Nationalism Countries ruled by others (colonies) aren’t happy being controlled French Revolution inspires ideals of “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” and Napoleonic Code across Europe

European Effect Seen in Europe – Napoleon’s brother Joseph on the throne of Spain leads to: Spain revolting and forcing Napoleon to quell the uprising – Other revolutions throughout Europe during mid- late 1800’s gain independence and create nations of: Poland, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Belgium, etc.

Global Effect Venezuela becomes independent from Spain (under Joseph Bonaparte) – Is first of many Latin American nations to do so Haitian slave revolt led by Toussaint Louverture – First successful mass slave revolt makes Haiti independent from France Latin American nations almost all have revolutions in the mid-late 1800’s Africa follows suit in the mid 1900’s

Why was it important then? – Inspired other revolutions – Helped carry out Enlightenment ideas: Rank and Nobility abolished, Monarchy abolished, etc. – Idea of superiority reflected in Napoleonic Code – Rights given in Napoleonic Code give citizens power and pride in country

Why is it important now? Revolutions ended colonial powers and created more countries Patriotism is a form of nationalism Idea of nationalism impacts political actions involving foreign and domestic policy (wars, economic trade, immigration, etc.)

Questions for Socratic Seminar Monday Think these ideas over and come up with responses and evidence that you could add to the discussion. – What makes the French Revolution revolutionary? – What changes did the Napoleonic Code make in France? In Europe? What is it’s legacy today? – What made the Napoleonic code revolutionary? – Where do we see Enlightenment ideas in the Napoleonic Code?

Q’s for Monday continued – What is the lasting impact of the French Revolution on the world? Why do we study it? – How did the idea of Nationalism impact Napoleon? How did the spread of Nationalism impact the rest of the world? – What are the differences between pre and post revolution France? – Where do we see Enlightenment ideas in practice during the French Revolution? Where do we continue to see those similar ideas today? – What other world events did the French Revolution help inspire?
