Citing Your Sources Giving Credit to the Creator – Protecting Against Plagiarism
Citing – C-I-T-I-N-G You may use a small amount of someone else’s creative work in your project, paper, or presentation. However, you MUST cite the source of the information in order to prevent plagiarism. How do I do that??
There are several “formats” used today. But we will use MLA formatting. It’s a commonly used ways to cite your sources.
In every project or paper where you use ideas that are not your own... You should create a “Works Cited” page (or slide) also known as a “bibliography.”
One of the easiest ways to do this is to use an online citation maker *bibme.org
At bibme.org You can copy/paste a URL (web) address and get a citation for the information you find online. You can type in the name of a book you’re using for information. You can type in the name of a movie, magazine article, newspaper article, journal article... AND BIBME CAN HELP YOU CREATE YOUR CITATION.
BIBME.ORG will build your “Works Cited” list... ... And then you can print it off, or copy/paste the citations onto a Word document, PowerPoint, or Google Doc.
You do need an account go sign up... And you all have an account through school. Your is through gmail. And it is: Your STUDENT Example: Username: Password: YYYYMMDD If you know your home , you may use it if you choose.
Now type this in your browser or web address window bibme.org
Create your account. Use your school if needed. USE YOUR SCHOOL PASSWORD (!!) SO YOU CAN REMEMBER... YYYYMMDD Must check both
As soon as you sign up, it will take your right to the site. Now you can get started citing your sources, creating your bibliography/works cited page.
Open another tab using the + sign in the upper corner of your iPad Type in Google.com Search: culture for kids Find a website you like, and copy the URL/web address.
When you find information from a site you want to use, copy the URL address. On iPad, press the URL address and hold it until it says “select all.” Click on this, and then click on “copy.”
Then click on “website” on bibme.org, and paste in your URL address. Hold your finger in the “Find a website” spot until the iPad says “Paste.” Click on this. Make sure you have deleted the text in the box first.
Click on “Find Website.” Then “Select.”
Information will pop up about your site, and you need to add as much as you can. Who is the sponsor/publisher? Is there a date the information was published? Is there an author’s name?
Usually, for a credible website, the sponsor or publisher can be found at the bottom of the web page. Look for a date IF you need information that changes quickly – like scientific information, news, etc.
For this site, I’m able to add the sponsor, but I see no date. I’ve added all I can, so I will select “Add to My Bib.”
And bibme.org will start your Works Cited page. Be sure to click on APA. Click on copy & paste
You should get a pop-up with the citation for the website. Press the iPad right on the citation. Select all. Copy. Then go back to your Keynote slide – Works Cited slide – and paste the citation onto that slide. When you start your project, you will do this for every website you use.
