Presentation transcript:

Millennium Development Goals Eight international development goals that 192 United Nations member states and at least 23 international organizations have agreed to achieve by the year 2015.

Background In 2001, recognizing the need to assist impoverished nations more aggressively, UN member states adopted the targets. The MDGs aim to spur development by improving social and economic conditions in the world's poorest countries.

So what are these goals? Fight Poverty Universal Primary Education Gender Equality Reduce Child Mortality Improve Maternal Health Fight Infectious Diseases Ensure Environmental Sustainability Develop a Global Partnership

Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than one dollar a day. Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and young people. Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.

Achieve universal primary education Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.

Promote gender equality and empower women Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015.

Reduce child mortality Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate.

Improve maternal health Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio. Achieve, by 2015, universal access to reproductive health.

Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS. Achieve, by 2010, universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all those who need it. Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.

Ensure environmental sustainability Reverse loss of environmental resources. Reduce biodiversity loss. Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum-dwellers.

Develop a global partnership for development Develop further an open trading and financial system that is rule-based, predictable and non-discriminatory. Address the special needs of the least developed countries. In co-operation with pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable essential drugs in developing countries. In cooperation with the private sector, make available the benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications.

What can we do? Step one: Raise awareness of these goals within the community Step two: Raise money to help charities who are working to achieve these goals

How can we do this? A joint project between S2 and S4 to host a charity evening in the school for members of the community!

S2 Project – Cartoon Challenge In groups, you will be tasked with making a cartoon about one of the millennium development goals.

Why? These cartoons will be used as the basis for a community open evening to raise awareness of the goals and raise money for charity. This evening will be organised by S4.

Criteria for Success Cartoons will be rated for... Factual Accuracy Layout and Overall Appearance Plot and Character Development

When? You will have time... during the next period to research your millennium goal with your group At the end of each lesson this week to work on your cartoon and gather information (10mins) During one period at the end of the week to put the finishing touches to your poster

Groups? Listen Up!
