Environmental Planning Option  Environmental Planning focuses on the choices we make as communities and as a society about how to best tap some of our natural resources today while conserving the rest for the future.  You will only find one undergraduate-level environmental planning program in the country, and it is right here at Humboldt State University. Planning for a Sustainable Future

The Planning curriculum introduces you to :  Bio-physical sciences that help us to understand our environment  The legal and regulatory, social and economic context in which natural resources are planned for and managed.  The theories underlying planning practice and scientific analysis methods that are widely used in rural community planning and wildland management efforts.  Public participation and conflict resolution methods in planning processes  The critical analysis and regulatory processes of Environmental Impact Assessment  Spatial analysis and Global Information Systems (GIS).

At HSU we are surrounded by the perfect laboratory for studying this field.  Are you interested in protecting and managing forests, wildlife, or wetlands by creating innovative conservation plans?  Do you seek to design communities that retain their cultural and historic uniqueness while expanding pedestrian and bicycle friendly transportation options?

The knowledge and skills you gain as a planning major at Humboldt State place you in high demand with employers in the natural resource and environmental planning fields, and the uniqueness of our program will give you a competitive edge against other job applicants.

Our graduates are employed by:  Community and county planning departments  Federal and state land and resource management agencies such as the United States Forest Service, the National Park Service, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, Calif. Department of Transportation, Calif. Dept of Fish and Game ….  Environmental consulting firms that specialize in environmental impact assessment or ecosystem restoration  Non-profit advocacy groups and land trusts Or they go on to:  Graduate degree programs in planning, law and natural sciences
