 Have you taken a stance that others may challenge?  No “kind of” or “sort of” “Sort of” is such a harmless thing to say. Sort of. It's just a filler. Sort of - it doesn't really mean anything. But after certain things, sort of means everything. Like after “I love you” or “You're going to live.” –Demetri Martin  Is your thesis statement vague?  Does your body support your thesis?  Many engaging thesis statements contain words like because, since, so, although, unless, which, and however.  Do not start off w/ “In this paper I will…” Is your thesis strong?

 Functions:  to engage the reader's attention  to identify for the reader the central issue or subject  to create the tone of the essay  Funnel Paragraph  The first sentence is the wide end of the funnel: a focused generalization that provides the necessary context and the subject.  Each succeeding sentence in the paragraph narrows the subject.  The last sentence of the paragraph, the least general statement, is the thesis of the essay.  NO NEW INFORMATION  Functions:  to stress the importance of the thesis statement  to give the essay a sense of completeness  to leave a final impression on the reader  Suggestions:  Don’t simply repeat things in your paper. The reader has read it. Show the reader how the points you made and the support and examples you used were not random. Explain how they fit together.  Answer the question “So What?”: Show the reader why this paper was important, meaningful, and useful.  You may want to end with a “call to action” – if you are arguing for some sort of change, wrap things up by championing the cause… Concluding Paragraph

MLA Format

 Do you have a thesis that makes a claim? Do you argue it convincingly?  Do you use properly cited quotations from your research to support your argument?  Do you have spelling and grammar errors that could distract your reader?  Do you use a variety of sentence types? [remember to use our various techniques to combine sentences]  Do your body paragraphs directly relate back to your thesis?  Does your paper meet format requirements?
