cider Which syllable receives the stress?  The first syllable, ci/ The schwa sound is in the second syllable.  ci / der Remember that different letters can spell the schwa + r sound!  or, ar, and er can make the same sound

lunch/lunches What was added to the word lunch?  -es The ending –es is added to words that end in sh, ch, ss, s, x, or z to make it plural.  fox/foxes mess/messes wish/wishes The ending –es forms its own syllable when it follows a consonant.

mystery/mysteries What was added to the word mystery?  -es In words that end in consonant plus y, the y changes to i when adding –es. Although the spelling changes, the vowel sound stays the same.

Word Work Make a chart in your journal that looks like the one below. Look through your reading book and find at least 5 words to put into each column. Break them up into syllables. Schwa + r sound Schwa + n sound Prefixes: Over-, Under-, Sub- Inflections: -s, and -es
