Jem Jem confessed to Scout that the night he went to fetch his trousers he found them neatly folded and mended on the Radley fence. It was as if someone knew Jem’s mind. Jem says you only learn something in school from the 6 th grade. Jem wants to write a letter of thanks for all the things they have received and place it in the knothole.

Jem (continued) Jem asks Mr Radley if he put cement in the knothole. Jem asks Atticus if the tree is dying. Jem cries a little bit by himself when he hears the answer from Atticus.

The knothole in the Oak tree Jem and Scout found grey twine in it. They found two carved images in soap. One of Jem and one of Scout. A whole package of chewing gum. An old spelling bee medal. A broken pocket watch on a chain with an aluminium knife, worth almost 10 pounds. The knothole is filled with cement.

Mr Nathan Radley He tells Jem he filled the knothole of the tree with cement. He says that is what you do when a tree is dying.

Atticus Atticus says in his opinion the tree with the knothole is not dying. When he hears that Mr Nathan says it was dying he said Mr Nathan must know his own trees better than Atticus.
