Gabčíkovo is the waterworks on the Danube river. it was common project of Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Later Hungary abandoned this project and Czechoslovakia spent a lot of money to finish it. the construction started in 1977 and was put in operation in 1992.

Function function of waterworks is save our country before floods. Waterworks produces energy for the Slovak Republic. waterworks stabilise a delta on the river Danube. It is a major touristic attraction near Bratislava.

Parts of the waterworks Čunovo Dam is the first level of the Waterworks producing 24 MW of electricity Čunovo includes also the Čunovo Water Sports Centre, a site of world championships in water slalom and rafting. Hrušov reservoir accumulates water for the main power plant in Gabčíkovo and also regulates water level. Gabčíkovo dam is the main part of the waterworks. It consists of two main structures: a hydropower plant and two lock chambers. Outlet channel leads water back to the old riverbed and also helps against floods.
