“ As a staff we have been working hard to get things ready (buildings, ministries, structure, etc.) for the people we serve. As I read the following blog I realized everything we do from small groups to having our building looking nice and clean is really about honoring God as we offer a way out of aloneness. Maybe that's why people keep coming. Sitting on the stairs during the service in a place you don't feel alone is way better than a comfy chair and an isolated heart. The Authority of the Son

Jesus as Savior says… You are forgiven. It costs you nothing. Come and live. Jesus as Lord says… Go and sin no more. It costs you everything. Come and die.

Spiritual formation is the grace-enabled effort whereby we adopt God’s thoughts with God’s passion resulting in Christ-likeness

Last week’s message: Your Own Personal Jesus

This week’s message: Jesus has authority in culture

In the world, but not of the world John 17: I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

IN the world 1 Corinthians 5: I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.

IN the world Mark 2: While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

But not OF the world 1 John 2: Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

But not OF the world Matthew 6:24 24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Four Cultural Values 1.Independence 1.Vanity 1.Comfort 1.Spirituality

1.Independence

2. Vanity

Def’n: excessive pride in one's appearance, qualities, abilities, achievements, etc.; character or quality of being vain; conceit

“ My drive in life comes from a fear of being mediocre. That is always pushing me. I push past one spell of it and discover myself as a special human being but then I feel I am still mediocre and uninteresting unless I do something else. Because even though I have become somebody, I still have to prove that I am somebody. My struggle has never ended and I guess it never will.

3. Comfort

4. Spirituality

How does this happen? John 17: I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.

Isaiah 57:14 And it will be said, “Build up, build up, prepare the road. Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.” The VISION behind IN but not OF

2 Corinthians 6: I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. 3 We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. 4 Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; 5 in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; 6 in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; 7 in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left…

The VISION behind IN but not OF 2 Corinthians 6: …through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; 9 known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; 10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. 11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.

Questions 1.Does Jesus have all authority in your life? 2.Are you committed to walking the fine line of being in the culture but not of it?
