What is a Polar Bear? A polar bear is a mammal, they eat meat and some berries. Polar bears weigh about ,000 pounds. Their height ranges from 6-11 feet. They can live as long as 25 to 30 years. Some scientists believe that polar bears cover their black noses with their paw to make them harder to spot as they hunt for seals. Besides keeping the bear warm, his white coat makes the bear hard to see against the white background of snow.

Migration to Different Areas Most polar bears migrate between different places like Greenland, Alaska, Canada, Siberia, Russia, and Europe. Polar bears walk on snow packs, ice, and swim to get to different place in the Arctic Circle. The main reason polar bears migrate is for food sources.

Polar Bears Food Source The polar bears have a limited food source in the Arctic Circle. The bears mostly eat meat and some berries. Their meat source comes from seals and fish. The longer the sea is frozen the longer polar bears can hunt. The more they can eat, the more they can store as fat for the winter.

The Environment The polar bear is a resident of the Arctic Circle. It is a cold and harsh environment. Tundra is where polar bears live in the permafrost. The soil just below the surface remains permanently frozen throughout the year. Summer in the tundra is quite a contrast from winter. The sun does not set for several weeks on end.

Shrinking Habitat The warming of Earth is known as global warming. Global warming is caused by the pollution from cars, trash and factories. Global warming is causing the ice caps to melt. The effect is the environment is getting smaller for the polar bears.

Struggling to Survive People are the greatest threat to polar bears. Oil Companies are starting to drill in the Arctic Circle to provide more fuel for cars. (Destroying this ecosystem.) The Polar bear population is shrinking. –Smaller food sources –Smaller habitat

How We Can Help! We can stop driving our cars and ride our bikes. Riding our bikes can stop us from polluting the air with our cars. Find an alternative oil such as using electric. By using electric you can prevent global warming from happening. To use less fuel, using less fuel will stop the pollution within the air and make a safer environment for polar bears.

Things You Can Do! We can write a letter to the President saying that we can start a program that will talk to people throughout the country to not use gasoline in order to save the polar bears. Another threat to polar bears comes from the desire of humans to use more and more fuel and to prevent this from happening use cars that runs on electric and not on gasoline.
