Skeletal & Muscular Systems

clavical Patella (Knee Cap) How many bones do you know?

W HAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM ? Provides shape to the body Muscle attachment Protects certain organs

W HAT ORGANS ARE PROTECTED ? Brain Heart & Lungs

H OW MANY BONES DO WE HAVE IN OUR BODY ? 206 Babies are born with 270 soft bones - about 64 more than an adult; and many of these will fuse together by the age of twenty or twenty-five into the 206 hard, permanent bones.

Define Joint: The point where 2 bones come together.

T YPES OF JOINTS Pivot (Swivel): Rotation around a fixed point Ellipsoidal: Allows movement in all ways except rotation. Saddle : allows movement in two directions. Ball & socket: round end of one bone fits into cup like end of another, most movement Hinge: Simplest joint, allows backward and forward movement. Plane (Gliding): 2 flat surfaces of bone slide over each other.

W HAT CONNECTS BONE TO BONE AT A JOINT ? Ligaments

W HAT IS THE TISSUE THAT CONNECTS MUSCLE TO BONE ? Tendon The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the human body and can withstand forces of 1,000 pounds or more. But it is also the most vulnerable and frequently ruptured tendon.

W HAT CUSHIONS THE BONES IN A JOINT ? Cartilage

M USCULAR S YSTEM

What muscles do you know?

Deltoids Pectorals Bicep Abs Quadriceps Trapezius Triceps Latissimus Dorsi Gluteus Maximus Hamstrings Gastrocnemius

Movement Creates heat Protection of the joints W HAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF THE M USCULAR S YSTEM ?

How do muscles work together to cause movement? The muscles work in pairs to keep your body moving When one muscle contracts (shortens), the other one relaxes (lengthens) Ex… the biceps and triceps muscles work as a pair to bend and straighten the arm (flexion and extension)

Aerobic vs. Anaerobic… what’s the difference?

Aerobic Activities… The body uses oxygen to strengthen the heart and lungs, builds endurance.

Anaerobic Activities… used for building muscle cell size

W HY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE BOTH AEROBIC AND ANAEROBIC ACTIVITIES ? What are some examples of both?
