The Election of 1800 Rematch of the Election of 1796 –President John Adams who won the election of 1796 (Federalists) –Vice President Thomas Jefferson who lost (Democratic-Republicans) Arguments from both sides that the other side was endangering the country End results –Jefferson 73 votes –Adams 65 votes –Aaron Burr (Jefferson’s running mate) 73 votes –Tie…goes to the Constitution for tie break procedure

Breaking the Tie Constitution states the HoR gets to choose President in the case of a tie. Although Democratic-Republicans won the new HoR seats, the Federalists still held them for a few months. –Many Federalist did not like Jefferson –Many realized Burr was not well qualified 36 ballots and 3 weeks later, finally the Federalists elected the more qualified Jefferson –Burr would never forgive Jefferson for negative statements he made about him
