Jefferson Becomes our 3 rd President in 1800 Look! That’s me!!!

In the 3 rd Presidential election of 1800 there were two political parties going head to head. - Federalists - Democratic-Republicans

The Election of 1800 FEDERALISTS DEMOCRATIC- REPUBLICANS JOHN ADAMS THOMAS JEFFERSON

Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr ( both Democratic Republicans ) were tied with 73 electoral college votes. Someone better break this tie! Let’s call Congress!

The House of Representatives voted to break the tie. It took us 36 votes but we finally have a decision. Jefferson is the new president! It’s about time!

This was the first time that one party had replaced another in power in the United States. Goodbye, Federalists! Goodbye, Federalists!

The 12 th Amendment Created a separate ballot for president and vice president.

Jefferson Wanted a Smaller Federal Government

He lowered military spending.

Allowed the Alien and Sedition Acts to expire.

He lowered domestic taxes like the whiskey tax.

Jefferson’s talents and interests included: Lawyer

ARCHITECTURE INVENTOR

BOOK COLLECTOR MUSICIAN

ASTRONOMER PLANT SCIENTIST

JOHN MARSHALL – a Federalist- appointed Supreme Court judge for over 30 years

MARBURY VS. MADISON Was a case that established the concept of “judicial review”

JUDICIAL REVIEW Means that the Supreme Court has the final say in interpreting the Constitution. (can declare an act of congress unconstitutiona l)
