New Unit: Analytical Reading You will need: Readers’ Notebook Post its Your novel Writing implement

Analytical Reading One of the most important things you will learn this year is how to perform critical analysis on your book.

What is Analytical Reading? Performing and “In- Depth” examination of your book. Then you will use evidence to support your analysis.

Analytical Lenses You can choose different “LENSES” to analyze a book. Today we will work with THEME. A theme is a reoccuring message, symbol or idea that pops up throughout a book.

Stop and Jot Can you think of a possible theme (message, idea or symbol) that reoccurs in the Harry Potter series? Take one minute Now turn and talk …

Do You Recognize This Symbol?

Your Task Find at least three possible themes for your assigned PICTURE BOOK. Provide proof – find text evidence and put in readers’ notebook. One group member will speak, one will record, and one will read aloud, and one will be the conversation starter.
