UK UNIVERSITIES ADMISSIONS UK universities highly regard students with an IB Diploma. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what IB subjects will be accepted by individual universities and what score is expected.

If a student does not have strong grades he/she can apply to a one year foundation course in selected programs which offer preparation for a degree program.

UK UNIVERSITIES ACCEPTANCE If a student receives all offers by March 31, he/she will be asked to select a firm and an insurance offer by May 6 th. This is not an easy choice because exam results are not known until June. Students without offers can enter “UCAS Extra” in February which enables applicants who used all 5 of their choices but did not receive offers to continue with their applications. If a student narrowly misses an offer, he/she should contact the university.

If neither offer is confirmed, the student enters “Clearing” in August. Students MUST arrange to have their exam scores sent to their firm and insurance offers.

PERSONAL STATEMENT Required for UK applications, included in some US/Canadian applications. You may be asked to include a self-description in some of your applications. Here are a few ideas you can use as a guide: ACADEMIC QUALITIES Tell about yourself as a student. Mention what you feel are your strong areas and how you felt your performance was as a student. PERSONAL QUALITIES Describe how you feel about yourself as a person, including those qualities that you feel comfortable with, the traits that you like in yourself. YOUR VALUES In a few sentences, mention the things that “you feel are important to you in your life”, those things about which you feel strongly.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION US/UK Letters written by the teacher and/or counselor address the academic and personal traits of the student. You will need to check your universities requirements about letters of recommendation. Universities seek evidence that the student demonstrates such intellectual qualities as: o Curiosity o Originality of thought o Independent judgment o Most importantly – the student’s potential for continued growth Well written and informative letters are frank, convey something concrete and important about the student. Such evaluations substantially enrich the admissions committee’s understanding of the student.
