Coastlands School News By the pupils of Coastlands Issue 11: July 2014 GO YELLOWS! We finally had our Sports Day yesterday and it was worth the wait. In beautiful sunshine, all the children worked really hard to do their best in their races. After a close battle, Yellow Team were finally announced as the winners. Yellow team members Emily Gray and Callum Nolan did particularly well but another amazing race was the girls’ relay, where Ria Burton (who is only in Reception!) ran for the Reds. Well done to everyone for taking part and thanks to all the people who helped out. Terrific Trip to Heatherton On Tuesday 15 th July Class Two and Three went to Heatherton on our end of year trip. We did lots of activities like bumper boats, go karting, body zorbs, bouncy castles and lots of other fun activities. Lots of people got really wet when we went in the water zone, which was splash-tastic! Our trip was partly paid for from money raised by the children in the Christmas Fayre, so well done to the people who raised it. Also, thanks to Mrs Gent and Francesca who came along to help with the visit. EXCITING IPADS While it’s great to have a holiday, some of us at Coastlands are already looking forward to the new school year as we have a new fantastic resource waiting for us...ipads! The PTA have kindly purchased 10 ipads for the school to use in lessons and we are already making lots of plans for them! Also, Mrs Burton got the Milford Haven Port Authority to pay for covers for them. Thank you to everyone who helps to support our school fundraising. This was a huge purchase and we’re very grateful. We can do some amazing things with all the money we raise. Top Marks for Teacher Salma We have had an interesting week at Coastlands with a visitor from Rahaleo Primary, our link school in Zanzibar. Teacher Salma spent three days with us and did lots of activities, including teaching us to count to ten in Kiswahili. On Monday she really enjoyed a special concert which we put on in her honour, where we sang songs, played instruments and danced. She also really enjoyed it when the girls taught her how to make loom band bracelets. Teacher Salma is our second Zanzibar visitor, following in the footsteps of Madame Riziki, who came over last year. Mrs Thorpe and Mrs Davies will be paying a return visit to Rahaleo in the October half term. School Website The new school website is shaping up and is ready for you to take a look. Summer Fayre Fun Last week children, parents, staff and friends had a great time at the Summer Fayre, which is held each year to give our Year 6 leavers a good send-off. There were lots of great stalls and activities including the tombola, soak the leaver, welly wanging and the fabulous cake stall. It was fantastic to get a bouncy castle too, so well done Mrs Thomas the cook for organising this! All the leavers were presented with their t shirts and there was some great music by Harry Turner, Anna Thomas and friends. The event raised a whopping £ so well done everyone who helped to organise the event and who came along to support it. Bronze Award for Coastlands This week we passed our first assessment in the Environmental, Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship Scheme (which is a Welsh Government initiative for schools in Wales) achieving our Bronze Award. The assessors came and met with Miss Lock and Mrs Davies to find out about our work on ‘Biodiversity’ and ‘Waste Minimisation’. They then met with the Eco Warriors, who showed them around the school and talked to them about all our eco work. Many thanks go to Miss Lock who works so hard for us in this area, and well done Eco Warriors. Looking forward to achieving the Silver Award next! MORE AMAZING ECO SUCCESS! We also heard this week that our eco –rap (which some of you might have heard at our concert on Monday) has won joint first place in the Pembrokeshire Eco Club Competition. We submitted a video of the children performing the rap, which was written mainly by the Eco Committee, in lots of different places around the school. As our prize, the Eco Committee has been awarded £100 to put towards a sustainable project in school. Ethan Davies was very excited to hear the news and all the eco warriors were really pleased. The weather was great and they had lots of fun. They tried to feed the wallabies, but they weren’t having any of it! The funniest thing was the visit to see the gibbons – Steve, Lisa and Bryn – who were very noisy and entertaining. Thank you to Francesca and Mrs Wilson who helped out with groups of children.
