European Commission Enterprise and Industry ‹#› European share of patents: around 1/3 in most KETs  Higher in advanced manufacturing technologies and industrial biotech  Lower in nanotechnology, micro and nanoelectronics and photonics Most European KET patent applications made by German applicants (more than 43%), followed by French (15%) and UK applicants (11%) Europe, North America and East Asia dominate KET patenting activity

European Commission Enterprise and Industry ‹#› Patents do not automatically lead to applications – KETs need to be applied in order to have impact Each KET needs a competitive manufacturing base in Europe Integrated, coordinated approach to KETs needed, linking actors from various policy domains at local, regional, national and international levels Interaction between research and development, manufacture and application is needed, combined with policies promoting KET skills by means of cross- disciplinary higher education and training. EU approach to KETs: a long-term research policy and supply of skills
