Naming Molecular Compounds!

What are Molecular Compounds made of?  Nonmetals ONLY!!

Molecular Compounds  Unlike ionic compounds, which must have a formula that is written so as to create zero net charge, molecular compounds can have more than one way of putting the same two atoms together.  Ex: CO CO 2

 CO CO 2 The first compound is a poisonous gas that is given off by faulty furnaces or water heaters. The second is the gas that we breath out with each breath. What is their Name?? Carbon monoxide and Carbon dioxide

 To differentiate between alternative possibilities, molecular compounds, the must be written using prefixes that state how much atoms of each element are in the formula.

 Nonmetals can combine in different ways  Use prefixes to distinguish between the combinations Example: CO and CO2  Prefixes indicate how many atoms of an element are present in each molecule of the compound  CO2 = Carbon dioxide Naming Binary Compounds

 1. Write the names in the order of the formula  2. Use prefixed to indicate the number of each kind of atom  If the first element has just one atom, do not use a prefix  3. End the name of the second element with “ide” Steps to Naming Binary Molecules

 Examples: NO 2 Nitrogen di oxide NONitrogen mon oxide N 2 O Di nitrogen mon oxide

 Name these PCl 3 P 4 O 10 Oxygen Difluoride Sulfur Trioxide

 Name these PCl 3 Phosphorus Trichloride P 4 O 10 Tetraphosphorus decaoxide Oxygen DifluorideOF 2 Sulfur Trioxide SO 3
