Henry Ford

Henry Ford was born July on a farm in Greenfield Township, Michigan. His father, William Ford, was born in Ireland and his mother, Mary Ford was born in Michigan. In 1879, Ford left home to work as an apprentice machinist in Detroit.

In 1882, he returned to Dearborn, where he became adept at operating the Westinghouse portable steam engine. During this period he also attended Detroit's University.

In 1891, Ford became an engineer with the Edison Illuminating Company. After his promotion in 1893, he had enough time and money to devote attention to his experiments on gasoline engines. These experiments culminated in 1896 with the first vehicle, the Quadricycle.

Encouraged by Edison, Ford designed and built a second vehicle...

the model t

The Model T was introduced on October 1, The car was very simple to drive and cheap to repair. It was so cheap that by 1920s, a majority of Americans had a Model T. Ford also created a huge publicity machine in Detroit to ensure every newspaper carried stories about the new product!

Always on the hunt for more efficiency and lower costs, in 1913, Ford introduced the moving assembly belts into his plants, which enabled an enormous increase in production.

Henry Ford & Son In December 1918, Henry Ford turned the presidency of Ford Motor Company over to his son Edsel Ford. Henry started another company and made a show of taking himself and his best employees to the new company.

Ford's thought

Ford was a pioneer of "welfare capitalism", designed to improve the lot of his workers and especially to reduce the heavy turnover that had many departments. On January 5, 1914, Ford announced his $5-per- day program, raising the minimum daily pay. It also set a new reduced workweek, although the details vary in different accounts.

Ford and Crowther in 1922 described it as six 8- hour-days. Ford was adamantly against labor unions: he thought they were too heavily influenced by some leaders. By 1932, Ford manufecturing one third of all the world's automobiles. He produced in Brasil, Australia, Great Britain and a lot of countries all over the world.
