Communications Technology Use of tools, materials, and processes to enhance our abilities to share information and ideas.
Communication Systems Using the systems of message, sender, channel, and receiver to communicate information.
Artificial Intelligence The ability of a computer or other machine to perform those activities that are normally thought to require intelligence.
Biometrics Technologies that measure and analyze human physical and behavioral characteristics for authentication purposes. Examples of physical characteristics include fingerprints, eye retinas and irises, facial patterns and hand measurements, while examples of mostly behavioral characteristics include signature, and typing patterns.
Data Factual information, especially information organized for analysis or used to reason or make decisions.
Digital Divide Gap between the “have’s” and “have-not’s” of computer related technology in our society. Computers are increasingly conditioning the kind of country we live in. Causing a widening of social gaps throughout our society, particularly among young people.
Data Mining Analysis of data in a database using tools which look for trends or anomalies. Invented by IBM who hold some related patents.
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, satellite and cable.
Global Positioning System (GPS) A system of satellites, computers, and receivers that is able to determine the latitude and longitude of a receiver on Earth by calculating the time difference for signals from different satellites to reach the receiver. Started in Military, now it is found in cellular phones.
Global Village The connection of individuals through a network of computer technology. Having the ability to communicate through phones, computers, internet give the senses of close proximity.
Information Knowledge of specific events or situations that has been gathered or received by communication, intelligence, or news. Information is made for data.
Information Highway The global information and communications network that includes the Internet and other networks. Networks include: switching systems such as telephone networks, cable television networks, and satellite communication networks.
Information Age The period beginning around 1970 and noted for the abundant publication, consumption, and manipulation of information. Mostly from computers and computer networks.
National Information Infrastructure (NII) The NII refers to that system of advanced computer systems, databases, and telecommunications networks throughout the United States that make electronic information widely available and accessible.
Telecommuting To work at home using a computer connected to the network of one’s computer.
Teleconferencing A conference held among people in different locations by means of telecommunications equipment, such as a closed-circuit television Using video allows you to see the person.
Telemedicine The use of telecommunications technology to provide, enhance, or expedite health care services by accessing off-site databases. This links clinics and physician's offices to central hospitals. X-rays and other diagnostic images can be sent from site to site.
