(ITGS) INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN A GLOBAL SOCIETY Group 3

Why Choose ITGS at IB? We live in a world of technology and ICT its part of our daily lives from when we wake until we go to sleep. From making phone calls to sending text messages to reading the news online and social networking with our friends.

ITGS explores how technology works and its effects on our lives IT has changed the world in an astonishingly short time and this change shows no sign of stopping. You’ll consider the effects of technology on many different parts of life. Technology and ICT are here to stay, where ever we turn in this world we are affected by technology.

It’s the way of the future You will see the advantages and disadvantages of the use of digitized information at the local and global level. You will recognise increasingly widespread use of IT to shape our society today, and that we have a responsibility to behave ethically in our use of technology.

Syllabus Outline At either level (SL or HL) the ITGS course consists of three compulsory interconnected strands that reflect the integrated nature of the course. Strand 1: Social and ethical significance Strand 2: Application to specified scenarios Strand 3: IT systems

Strand 1: Social and ethical issues in real situations 1 Reliability and integrity 7 Surveillance 2 Security8 Globalization and cultural diversity 3 Privacy and anonymity 9 Policies 4 Intellectual property10 Standards and protocols 5 Authenticity11 People and machines 6 The digital divide and equality of access 12 Digital citizenship Students will study the following 12 issues.

Strand 2: Application to specified scenarios Scenarios based on real-life situations will be used when addressing specified IT developments. You will study the following 6 themes. 1 Business and employment 2 Education and training 3 Environment 4 Health 5 Home and leisure 6 Politics and government

Strand 3: IT systems 1 Hardware2 Software 3 Networks4 Internet 4 Personal and public communications 6 Multimedia/digital media 7 Databases8 Spreadsheets, modelling and simulations 9 Introduction to project management 10 IT systems in organizations 11 Robotics, artificial intelligence and expert systems 12 Information systems specific to the annually issued case study The terminology, concepts and tools relating to specified IT developments.

Assessment outline—SL Assessment componentWeighting External assessment (3 hours) Paper 1 (1 hour 45 minutes) Five structured questions that assess in an integrated way the three strands of the syllabus. Social and ethical significance Application to specific scenarios IT systems Students answer three of five structured questions on any of the SL/HL core topics. (60 marks) Paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes) This paper consists of one unseen article. Students are required to write a response to this article. (26 marks) 70% 40% 30%

Assessment outline—SL Internal assessment This component is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB at the end of the course. Project (30 hours) The development of an original IT product for a specified client. Students must produce: a cover page using prescribed format an original IT product documentation supporting the product (word limit 2,000 words). (30 marks) 30%

Assessment outline—HL External assessment (4 hours 45 minutes) 80% Paper 1 (2 hours 15 minutes) Seven structured questions in three sections Section A Students answer two of three structured questions on any of the SL/HL core topics. Section B Students answer one of two structured questions based on “IT systems in organizations”. Section C Students answer one of two structured questions based on “Robotics, artificial intelligence and expert systems”. (80 marks) 35%

Assessment outline—HL Paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes) This paper consists of one unseen article. Students are required to write a response to this article. (26 marks) Paper 3 (1 hour 15 minutes) Four questions based on a pre-seen case study. (30 marks) 20% 25%
