“Why Baptize With Water?” Matthew 28:19-20 February 1, 2009
I. We baptize because of Jesus’ instruction. Jesus set the example himself (Matthew 3:13-17). – Baptism was practiced by John the Baptist – Jesus submitted himself to John’s baptism To fulfill all righteousness To initiate his public ministry To identify with man’s sin – His baptism set him apart
I. We baptize because of Jesus’ instruction. Jesus gave us the “Great Commission” (Matthew 28:19-20) – Make disciples On His authority – Baptize them In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – Teach them To observe the commandments/teachings
II. We baptize because of its spiritual significance. Baptism connects us to Christ – We take His name Matthew 28:19, “…baptizing them in the name…” – We are clothed with Christ Galatians 3:27, “…for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” – We identify with His death, burial and resurrection. Romans 6:4, “…raised from the dead…live a new life.”
II. We baptize because of its spiritual significance. Baptism is the outward expression of a spiritual work. – There must be a profession of faith. Acknowledge and accept – There must be a change in behavior. Repent and change in lifestyle – There must be a surrender to God. Being totally yielded to Christ
