The connection between hunger, rising healthcare costs, and medical debt in Utah

survey results  In April and May, over 900 people were interviewed. –Crossroads Urban Center emergency food pantry clients –Central City residents

demographics  62.8% of food pantry clients are completely uninsured.  24.3% have been kicked off a government health insurance program due to paperwork issues

key findings  69% of families have had to skip a meal or go to an emergency food pantry because of medical expenses.  70.8% have had to go without needed medical care due to their inability to afford it.

medical debt

What can be done?  Hospitals can adopt charity care and fair billing practices.  The local government can review contracts with ambulance companies and other healthcare providers to ensure they promote decent billing practices.  The state government can expand access to healthcare programs so more low income Utahns can afford basic care, and pass legislation requiring hospitals to follow fair billing practices.
